Madhur Bhandarkar was born on 26th August 1968 in a Maharashtrian Saraswat Brahmin family; Madhur Bhandarkar ran a video cassette library in Khar (w), a suburb of Mumbai. This gave him access to a large collection of movies and he studied film making through it. He first start his carrier as a assistant director. He made his directorial debut with 'Trishakti' which took more than two years to complete and released in 1999. After two years he directed 'Chandni Bar' (2001) starring Tabu and Atul Kulkarni. The film was a critically acclaimed success, which took Bhandarkar into the top league of filmmakers in Bollywood. He received his first National Award for this film.
Madhur Bhandarkar is known for his socially relevant and hard-hitting films. "I just show what happens in society" - Madhur Bhandarkar said in an interview.he got three national award for his three socially relevant movies. Madhur’s first National award was for Chandni Bar, which was selected as Best Social film, for the year 2002. Than came Page 3, which changed the entire stature of Madhur Bhandarkar. This film, apart from winning him rave reviews, also won the National award in best Feature Film category. Film Traffic Signal became his third in a row National Award, as he is announced as the best Film Director of 2007, for Traffic Signal.
Madhur's movies have always tried to enlightening the audience about the darker aspects of life is it in the corporate world in Corporate, the political games in Satta or the challenges of the media world in Page 3. In most of his films Bhandarkar has made the female the main central character. This has been seen in four of his films: Tabu in Chandni Bar, Raveena Tandon in Satta, Konkona Sen Sharma in Page 3 and Bipasha Basu in Corporate.
In an interview he said "My movies are not exposes, maybe they just hold up a mirror to society. My movies are not judgmental; I just show what happens in our society, sometimes there could be a solution and sometimes there may be none. Life goes on."
The year 2008 saw the release of his expose of the Fashion world, by his film 'Fashion' starring Priyanka Chopra , Kangana Ranaut and Mugdha Godse in lead roles. Critics praised Priyanka Chopra and especially Kangna Ranaut, for delivering remarkable performances as supermodels who lose everything in the world of fashion. This movie is based on the dark side of the world of fashion, it’s a truly outstanding film made by bhandarkar. Now in 2009 his upcoming movie is “jail”, let see how it is. Recently, the controversy with starlet PREETI JAIN resurfaced in the media.
